Pharos Secure Printing — FAQ

What is changing?

  • We’re switching to Pharos Secure Print, a cloud “follow-me” printing system. Send a job to the Pharos Secure Printer and release it at any Pharos-enabled HP or Toshiba device on campus.
  • Copiers (multi-function devices) will still scan and copy. Only a few devices will offer color printing.
  • Standalone and non-networked desk printers will be removed as part of the consolidation.
  • Student Printing is not impacted or changing
  • For detailed user guides please visit the Knowledge Base - Pharos Secure Printing

Why am I seeing a Pharos log in screen?

When will this happen?

  • Rollout happens by building and floor. New HP/Toshiba devices will be installed first; old printers will be removed afterward.
  • Detailed communications will be issued prior to deployment to each area.

Why are we doing this?

  • To meet SUNY policy and reduce cost, waste, and paper use.
  • To standardize and secure campus printing and lower maintenance and operating costs.

How do I print with Pharos?

  • One-time registration is required. (ITS will pre-install the Pharos client on campus computers.)
  • Quick print steps:
  1. Choose “Pharos Secure Printer” when you print.
  2. On first use you’ll sign in and get a 6-character release code (on-screen and emailed).
  3. Scan your NCC ID at any Pharos-enabled device.
  4. If asked, enter the release code to link your badge for future prints.
  5. At the release station, select your job and choose Print or Cancel.

How do I scan or copy?

Can I print in color?

  • Only selected devices will support color, per SUNY policy. A list of color-capable devices will be shared as installations finish.

What about large or recurring departmental print jobs?

  • Contact Printing & Publications to arrange departmental or high-volume printing solutions.

Are my print jobs secure and private?

  • Yes. Jobs are stored securely in the cloud and only print after you release them at the device (badge or release code required).

What happens to old printers and supplies?

  • ITS will collect and properly dispose of old devices and pick up supplies during removal. If something is left behind, submit a General Technology Help request for pickup.

Who handles toner and paper?

  • Toner will auto-order; ITS Client Services will deliver and install it.
  • Paper ordering stays the same.
