NCC Employee Password Reset and Expiration FAQ

Summary

Employee passwords expire every 180 days in accordance with Nassau Community College security standards.

To avoid interruptions to email, MyNCC, WiFi, and other College services, employees are encouraged to update their password before it expires.

Your NCC password is used for:

  • MyNCC Portal
  • College workstations and laptops
  • Microsoft 365 services
  • Outlook Email
  • Microsoft Teams
  • OneDrive
  • NCC WiFi
  • Other systems that use NCC credentials


Password Requirements

When creating a new password, it must meet the following requirements:

Length Requirement

  • Minimum of 15 characters

Complexity Requirement

Your password must contain characters from at least three (3) of the following categories:

  • Uppercase letters (A-Z)
  • Lowercase letters (a-z)
  • Numbers (0-9)
  • Special characters (!, @, #, $, %, etc.)

Password History

  • Your previous six passwords cannot be reused.

Name Restriction

  • Your password cannot contain three or more consecutive characters from your first or last name.

Option 1: Change Your Password via MyNCC

This option can be completed either on-campus or off-campus.

If You Know Your Current Password

  1. Visit MyNCC.ncc.edu
  2. Sign in using your N Number and password.
  3. Select the Password Reset option.

  4. Follow the prompts to create a new password.
  5. Wait up to 30 minutes for synchronization to complete across all systems.

Option 2: Change Your Password from an NCC Computer

If Your Password Has Not Expired

  1. Log in to your NCC computer.
  2. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE.
  3. Select Change a Password.
  4. Enter:
    • Your current password
    • Your new password
    • Confirmation of your new password
  5. Submit the change.

If Your Password Has Expired

  1. Attempt to sign in to your NCC computer.
  2. When prompted, select OK to change the expired password.
  3. Enter and confirm a new password.
  4. Complete the password update.
     
Note: Please allow up to 30 minutes for the new password to synchronize with Microsoft 365 and other systems.

Option 3: Reset an Expired Password

If your password has expired and you cannot sign in:

  1. Visit MyNCC.ncc.edu
  2. Select Forgot Password
  3. Complete the identity verification steps
  4. Create a new password
  5. Allow up to 30 minutes for synchronization

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I do nothing?

Once your password expires, you may lose access to:

  • MyNCC
  • Email
  • Microsoft Teams
  • OneDrive
  • College computers
  • NCC WiFi
  • Other systems that use NCC credentials

You will need to reset your password before access is restored.


Will I need to update the password on my phone for WiFi?

Yes.

If your phone or tablet connects to NCC WiFi using your NCC credentials, you will need to enter your new password when prompted.

If you have trouble reconnecting, you may need to forget the network and reconnect using your updated password.


Will I need to update my email applications?

Possibly.

Applications such as Outlook may ask you to sign in again after your password changes.

When prompted, simply sign in using your new password.


Will I need to sign back into Microsoft 365 applications?

Possibly.

Applications including:

  • Outlook
  • Teams
  • OneDrive
  • Microsoft Office

may require you to re-authenticate after the password change.


I changed my password, but Outlook, Teams, or another application is still asking for my old password. What should I do?

After changing your password, it may take up to 30 minutes for the updated password to synchronize across NCC systems and Microsoft 365 services.

If you continue receiving credential prompts:

  1. Wait 30 minutes.
  2. Close and reopen the application.
  3. Sign in using your new password.

If the issue persists after 30 minutes, contact MyIT Support & Services.


My account became locked shortly after I changed my password. Why?

This is usually caused by one or more devices attempting to use your old password.

Common causes include:

  • Outlook on a mobile device
  • Microsoft Teams
  • OneDrive
  • NCC WiFi
  • Smartphones and tablets
  • Home computers
  • Saved credentials on another device

Update your password on all devices as soon as possible to prevent lockouts.


How many devices should I update?

Any device or application that uses your NCC credentials should be updated, including:

  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Laptops
  • Home computers
  • Outlook
  • Teams
  • OneDrive
  • NCC WiFi connections

Can ITS reset my password over the phone?

No.

For security reasons, ITS cannot reset passwords over the phone.

Employees must use the self-service password reset process whenever possible.


What if self-service password reset does not work?
